Phalaborwa United FC advanced to the next round of the Nedbank Cup with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over 10-man Selwane White Vultures in an intense and tightly contested local derby on Saturday.
Magheba scored the decisive goal after a clever assist from Muxe, who showed great vision to unlock the defence. The result gave Head Coach Tefu Mashamaite a winning start in his debut match in charge of Phalaborwa United.
Defender Thami was rock-solid at the back before being withdrawn due to a knock, while Ofense anchored the midfield with calmness and control. Magic added energy and creativity after coming on as a substitute, helping United maintain their grip on the game.
Both teams displayed a great deal of caution throughout the match, mindful of the high stakes and the emotional weight of the derby. The opening stages were marked by measured play and minimal risk-taking, with neither side willing to commit too many players forward and leave space at the back. Selwane White Vultures sat deep, looking to catch Phalaborwa United on the counter, while United focused on maintaining possession and probing patiently for openings rather than forcing the issue.
As a result, clear chances were few and far between, and the midfield battle became the defining feature of the contest. However, Phalaborwa United’s tactical discipline eventually paid off, with Mashamaite’s side finding the breakthrough thanks to a moment of quality between Muxe and Magheba.
Coach Mashamaite’s well-timed substitutions and calm leadership ensured that United held onto their lead comfortably in the closing stages, demonstrating maturity and composure under pressure.
“It was a tough match, as we expected from a derby,” said Coach Tefu Mashamaite after the game. “Both teams were very cautious, and we had to be patient. What pleased me most was our discipline — defensively and tactically. The boys stuck to the plan, and when the opportunity came, we took it. There’s still a lot to improve on, especially in creating more chances, but this is a good foundation to build from.”
The victory sends Phalaborwa United into Round 2 of the Nedbank Cup, where they will face Nkowankowa Continental FC on 18 October. The team will look to build on this solid defensive performance and carry their momentum forward under Mashamaite’s leadership.
